Artist Training – Access Art Schools Berlin
Making Art in a Shifting Landscape by Dina Khouri & Salwa Aleryani
This workshop aims to bring artists together to share their practices and create a space for exchange and support. Mindful of the shifting landscape of arts and culture in a time of growing authoritarianism and economic pressure, we will discuss strategies for sustaining our practices in the city. Together, we will re?ect on individual and collective needs and challenges, while encouraging participants to share resources and build mutual support.
Topics include an overview of artist-run and community spaces, art in public spaces, and facilities with workshops and material resources. One session will include visits to selected art and community spaces in the city to see how they organize their programs and collaborate with artists and local communities.
As part of the workshop, we also o?er support to participants who wish to apply to art and design study programs in Berlin and across Germany. This includes portfolio and CV support, as well as feedback on artist statements and proposals in progress.
The workshop is led by Dina Khouri and Salwa Aleryani, two artists who met in Beirut. Dina Khouri is a painter, and Salwa Aleryani works with found and made objects. Working across a range of media, their practices have taken shape in a variety of educational, exhibition and site-speci?c contexts.

ARTIST TRAINING has been a programme for artists at risk at the Berlin University of the Arts since 2016. The programme, which includes training and advisory services, includes sector-specific courses, workshops on self-employment, instructional films, excursions and one-to-one consultations. In total, over 900 people from the fields of music, visual arts, performing arts, film and, initially, cultural journalism have been supported in their strategic positioning and further professional development. Over the years, a Germany-wide network has emerged through various projects, including: the KONRAD WOLF Film University Babelsberg (2016-2021), INTRO of the Hamburg Cultural Authority, Global Board Hannover (2020-21), the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts (2025-26) and Scholars at Risk Berlin-Brandenburg (2024 onwards). The overarching objectives are to transfer transcultural artistic practice into the cultural and creative industries and to the Berlin University of the Arts, and to foster networking and visibility within higher education institutions through working groups, specialist conferences and the Academic Freedom Week. In addition, internal event series, research papers, blog posts and podcasts on institutional transformation processes are being developed.
